Understanding this distinction is crucial for navigating the digital asset landscape.
The “0x” Prefix: A Technical Identifier
In computer science, particularly in programming and data representation, “0x” is a standard prefix used to denote a hexadecimal number. Hexadecimal (base-16) is a number system that uses 16 distinct symbols, typically 0-9 and A-F. It’s widely employed in computing because it offers a more human-readable way to represent binary data, which is fundamental to how computers store information.
In the blockchain context, “0x” commonly prefixes:
- Ethereum Addresses: Every Ethereum wallet address, which is a public identifier for a user or a smart contract, begins with “0x”. These addresses are 40 hexadecimal characters long (20 bytes).

- On-Chain Settlement: Once a matching order is found and accepted by a taker, the signed order is sent to the 0x Protocol’s smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain for settlement. The smart contract verifies the signatures, ensures the user has the required tokens, and atomically executes the trade, transferring tokens directly between the buyer and seller.
- Smart Contracts: The protocol is governed by a set of audited smart contracts that handle order validation, execution, and token transfers securely.
